What I've Learned: The Digital Divide and the Internet
I found it very fascinating that only 42% of the world population used the internet. Regarding the video in chapter 2, some strong points were made, such as, the internet is now just as much of a tool as a hammer or as any other machinery; however, there are so many regions and people who do not have access to the internet or even a computer. Most job applications are filled out online, how can one get a job to get a computer and internet access if the application is done online? I learned that cable companies and wireless companies are two separate businesses and that they have strategically planned to cover specific regions so there is no competition and therefore the user is forced to stick with one company and pay the price no matter how it fluctuates...real smart. I also found it interesting that there is such a large gap between regions, in China, one could get extremely fast internet for roughly $25/month and then in other parts of the world there were no computers, let alone internet access.
